Maya is a social studies teacher at Dr. Jorge Alvarez High School in the Providence Public School District. She is a mentor teacher for the Brown MAT program, helping to support emerging educators on their path to becoming highly-effective, culturally-responsive, student-centered teachers. Her educator superpower is building student relationships and a strong classroom community.
ACHIEVEMENTS
  • Coached 3 Early Adopters at Gallagher Middle School and Smithfield High School
  • Collaborated with the One Gun Gone Project as part of a project-based learning unit centered around the essential question “Does America have a problem with its guns?”
  • Collaborated with STEAMBox, an incredible, innovative after-school and academic enrichment program, to create a student-moderated podcast
  • Developed differentiated, culturally relevant projects that leveraged the Summit Learning Platform while also adhering to the Providence Public School District’s Racial and Ethnic Equity Policy.
